23 Candidates Have CU Support in 3 Primaries, One Runoff This Week

WASHINGTON–Credit unions are providing financial and other support to 23 candidates running in three state primaries and one runoff this week.

The primaries are taking place in Alabama, Georgia and Arkansas, while Texas is holding a runoff election. In all, the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC) and the respective state associations have provided $143,000 in support, according to Trey Hawkins CUNA’s deputy chief advocacy officer for political action.

In Alabama, as CUToday.info reported earlier, credit unions are “heavily engaged” on behalf of Katie Britt in the Republican primary race for a Senate seat. Britt is part of a competitive three-way race that Hawkins said is expected to go to a runoff. CULAC and the League of Southeastern Credit Unions have sent materials in support of Britt to 150,000 Republican households in the state that are also credit union members.

Also in Alabama, CULAC and the League of SECUs are supporting Dale Strong in the Republican primary to represent the state’s fifth district in the House. Strong is currently chairman of the Madison County Commission.

In Georgia, CULAC and the league are involved with candidates in two seats created by redistricting. In Georgia’s sixth district, credit unions are supporting emergency room doctor Rich McCormick in the Republican primary, while in Georgia’s crowded Republican primary to represent the 10th district, credit unions are backing Mike Collins.

In the Texas runoff, meanwhile, credit unions continue to support incumbent Democrat Rep. Henry Cuellar, whom Hawkins called a “strong champion” of credit unions.

In all, said Hawkins, CULAC and its respective state leagues have supported 76 candidates in the 2022 primaries to date, 73 of whom have won their races. In two of those races, Oregon and Pennsylvania, recounts are underway.
