18 Candidates Getting CULAC Backing in This Week’s Primaries; 3 Races to Watch

WASHINGTON–Credit unions have a financial investment in 18 candidates running as part of the primaries taking place in five states this week, beginning today.

Primaries are set today for Connecticut, Minnesota, Vermont, and Wisconsin, while Hawaii will hold its primaries on Saturday. Trey Hawkins, deputy chief advocacy officer with CUNA, said the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), the trade association’s PAC, has spent $108,000 on 18 races that involve backing for 15 incumbents and candidates for three open seats.

CULAC is not supporting any candidates in Connecticut because it had already supported incumbents who emerged from the state Democratic convention as the winners and who are running unopposed in that Democratic state. As a result, there is no Democratic primary being held.

Three Candidates

In races involving open seats, CULAC is supporting:

  • Minnesota first district. CULAC is supporting Republican Brad Finstad, who earlier won a special election to fill the unexpired term of Jim Hagedorn, who died in February. He is now running for a full term.
  • Vermont. The Green Mountain State has one congressional seat and CULAC is backing Democrat Becca Balint in the primary.
  • Hawaii second district. CULAC is backing Democrat Jill Tokuda, a former state senator who has a “long history of strong relationships with Hawaii Credit Union League,” said Hawkins.
