117th Congress is Sworn In, And First Order of Business is the Order of Business

WASHINGTON–The 117th Congress has been sworn in and at least in the short term the business will be all about getting its House (and Senate) in order.

Both the House and Senate are in session, with most of the headlines currently focused on certifying the results of the most recent presidential election. While some GOP members have announced plans to challenge the certification, President-Elect Joe Biden is expected to be sworn into office on Jan. 20. Behind the scenes Congress will be busy sorting out committee assignments—a process that typically takes several weeks, said CUNA’s chief advocacy officer, Ryan Donovan, and passing the House rules package.

That will most likely be followed by confirmation hearings for Biden’s cabinet selections.

“We are eager and excited to engage the new Congress on the financial well-being of credit union members and the communities they serve,” said Donovan. “We are prepared to advance our priorities.”

Those priorities, he said, will include the need to “rightsize” regulatory burden, improve security around payments, the preservation of the credit union tax exemption, and other issues.
